What is CLIMBING MINDS?

Climbing Minds builds executive function, self-regulation, and motor skills through rock climbing. This group is led by dedicated pediatric OTs with a passion for rock climbing. Each session offers opportunities to build executive function skills, face challenges, and gain self-confidence in a supportive small-setting group.

What is Executive Function?

Executive function (EF) is really important! Getting organized, managing emotions, remembering stuff, starting tasks, and finishing projects - these are all essential elements of EF. It includes the cognitive skills we use to analyze tasks, break them into manageable steps, and get things done. EF skills allow us to manage our time effectively, solve multi-step problems, and self-regulate. EF impacts everything from learning and friendships to daily routines -  like trying to pack your backpack for school or playing a pick-up game with friends.

Is my child the right fit for CLIMBING MINDS?

Children 8 years old and older are welcome in this group. No experience with rock climbing is required.

Do you offer individual OT sessions at the rock climbing gym?

Yes, we do! To learn more about this, schedule a free consultation

When and Where is CLIMBING MINDS?

This group meets on 6 consecutive Monday afternoons (with some exceptions for holidays) from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm. The first 2 sessions take place at Hiller Therapy, and the last 4 sessions meet at the rock climbing gym. There is a fall group and a spring group each year. Please schedule a consultation for the exact session dates of each group.

  • The first 2 sessions of each group take place at Hiller Therapy. Our indoor/outdoor OT therapy studio is located at 1137 S Point View Street in Los Angeles. These sessions focus on skill-building activities and assessment of executive function. Because we use both indoor and outdoor spaces during this group, please dress for the weather, and plan to get messy. We require socks (for inside) and closed-toed shoes (for outside). Please send your child with sunscreen already applied.

  • The final 4 sessions of each group take place at Sender One LAX on Mondays from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm. These rock climbing sessions target problem-solving, sequencing, working memory, and metacognition skills. Sender One's address is 11220 Hindry Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90045.

  • While we understand that weekdays are hard, we are following Sender One’s availability, and that means Mondays.

How many kids are in CLIMBING MINDS?

Groups are limited to 6-8 children. This ensures at least a 2:1 student-to-leader ratio. That way your child receives individualized attention while reaping the benefits of an exciting group experience.

Does my child need to be in OT to benefit?

No! These groups are designed both for children with identified needs and those who are looking for a fun way to strengthen skills. Our groups are thoughtfully designed to meet and celebrate our different strengths, interests, and abilities.

Who leads CLIMBING MINDS?

All groups are led by Leah King, MA, OTR/L (a pediatric OT and seasoned climber) along with Masters-level occupational therapy students. Together, we offer a creative, collaborative approach that combines our extensive experience with evidence-based tools. This team approach ensures individualized attention with a 2:1 ratio.

Do you offer parent training to the grown-ups?

Yes, we do! A Parent Workshop is offered via Zoom at noon on the second Monday. The workshop includes strategies and home-based activities to support your children’s executive function.

How do you track progress during CLIMBING MINDS?

Each child will be assessed at the beginning to track individual progress. At the end of the group, we provide you with individualized strategies and games to ensure carryover and success at home, at school, and at play.

How much does CLIMBING MINDS cost?

This group costs $720. Because the group experience is an important part of this group, we cannot offer a daily rate. This fee includes 6 sessions, a complimentary parent workshop held over Zoom, and all climbing fees and equipment. Your registration for the group is complete when payment is made by credit card via our client portal. Your payment includes a $100 non-refundable deposit per group

What is your cancellation policy?

  • Your registration for the group is complete when payment in full is made by credit card via our client portal.

  • Your payment includes a $100 non-refundable deposit per group

  • For all summer groups (June through August), cancellations prior to May 1 will be refunded (minus the $100 non-refundable deposit). For fall and spring groups that run weekly, cancellations at least 4 weeks prior to the group's start date will be refunded (minus the $100 non-refundable deposit).

  • Cancellations at least 2 weeks in advance will be refunded 50%.

  • There will be no refunds within 2 weeks of your group's start date.

  • Rescheduling to another session depends on availability, your child's age, and the make-up of the group.

  • If your child misses one day of a session that they are enrolled in, we offer limited make-up times in the clinic. We cannot offer make-ups at Sender One due to their limited availability.

Can I get a superbill for insurance?

We are not in-network for health insurance. For children who qualify, a superbill will be provided for you to submit to PPO insurance plans. Please reach out to your insurance to find out about reimbursement for OT. This group is billed under a group code (CPT 97150-GO), and an ICD-10 may be assigned when appropriate, based on your child's strengths and challenges. Superbills are issued monthly, after the session. When you register your child for the group, please let us know if you would like to receive a superbill.
